CNN analyst claps back at firearms reporter in testy exchange

CNN senior political analyst Kirsten Powers questions firearms reporter Stephen Gutowski during a fiery discussion about Wednesday’s mass shootings. (see video below).

The exchange between the two followed two high-profile mass shootings last week, including the Club Q shooting that killed five people in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Saturday and another shooting that left seven people, including the shooter, dead. had died. Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Tuesday.

Authorities said both shootings involved a handgun, while the Colorado Springs shooting involved a gunman with an AR-15 style rifle — the same gun used in the Buffalo and Uvalde shootings earlier this year.

Kasi Hunt, who hosts a CNN panel on gun violence in America, asked Gutowski whether mass shootings in the US are due to access to assault weapons or “a cultural thing”.

Gutowski, founder of the pro-gun site The Reload, said the Colorado Springs shooting suspect — who was arrested last year for an alleged bomb threat — could have been barred from buying guns based on his criminal history.

He later got into a testy back-and-forth exchange with Powers that alluded to the end of the federal assault weapons ban in 2004, when he said that two recent shootings “show it’s not just about AR-15s.” Not about.”

“I mean it’s like a game you guys play,” Powers said sharply.

There have been more than 600 incidents of mass shootings in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a website that tracks shootings that have killed at least four victims.

That amount is on track to make 2022 the year with the second-highest number of mass shootings, CNN said.
