A mother is furious after staff at a cafe gave her a dustbin and brush and asked her to clean up her child’s mess.
The woman turned to Mumsnet to vent her frustration and a debate broke out over who was in the right.
She wrote: “I go to a cafe every week with a group of friends and our kids. Apparently, the week before last, one of the cafe manager’s moms had to go over because she said her kid had Messed up under his height.” He didn’t clean the chair before leaving.
“This week, when I was packing to go — with a screaming, exhausted baby who refuses to nap because of teething — she gave me a dustpan and brush and put food boxes under my high chair. Pointed out some crumbs and asked me to clean up. after myself. It is advertised as a very family friendly cafe.
“Is it inappropriate to ask a parent to clean the floor after their child? I’m torn because, on the one hand, I can see how annoying this would be to the staff.
“On the other hand, I don’t bring cleaning materials with me and it is advertised as family friendly, which I guess would mean they know kids make messes!”
Not everyone is so sympathetic.
One user posted: “I would say the food on the floor goes way beyond the realm of normal filth and I would be asked to clean it. People are totally rotten in cafes and restaurants.”
Another said: “When my son was in a state of knocking things over from a high chair, I asked for a dustpan and brush or used wipes to clean up. It’s polite of the staff.”
A third said: “If they give you a dustpan and brush and your child has made a mess with the food, I’ll clean it up before I leave.
“Surely you clean it when your child is in the highchair? It’ll take a minute to do that.”
While a fourth said: “You should have cleaned up after your baby. I’m amazed at how often I see people freaking out and leaving messes all over the floor.”
“If an adult drops food, they will pick it up. So you should do the same for your child.”
