Idaho police to hold press conference 10 days after college student killings

Officials in Moscow, Idaho will hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon related to their ongoing investigation into the horrific murders of four local university students.

Authorities have said University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Zana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21, were stabbed multiple times and killed in the early morning hours of Nov. 13. Police have not identified any suspects.

Moscow police received a call shortly before noon on 13 November reporting an “unconscious person” at a King Road home. Officials said that by the time the police reached the spot, several other people had gathered at the spot.

Investigators determined that all four were stabbed in their sleep between 3 and 4 a.m. after returning home from a night out. Some of the victims tried to defend themselves.

Two other roommates were inside the house, on the lower floor, at the time of the murder, but they were unharmed.

They were all believed to have been killed using a “fixed-blade knife”, which has yet to be recovered.

Police said the victims had split into pairs earlier in the night. Police said Chapin and Kernodle, both 20, were seen at the Sigma Chi house on the university’s campus and that Chapin was not believed to live at the home but had returned home around 1:45 p.m. Told.

Goncalves and Mogen spent the night at a bar called The Corner Club, and then went to a local food truck, where they were seen around 1:40 a.m. They were believed to have been dropped off at their home by a “private party” at around 1:40 a.m. was moved. :45 p.m., police said.

Police said the surviving roommates also went out that night, but returned home by 1 am.

Authorities said late Thursday that investigators had received information that Goncalves might have a stalker. Investigators “looked extensively” at those reports and “pursued hundreds of pieces of information” related to the predator tip. As of Tuesday, they were unable to confirm the information or identify the pursuer.

Moscow Police Department officials are asking the public to share “all exterior surveillance video taken from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from businesses and residences within a specific area.” A map of the area is below.

Moscow Police Capt. Roger Lanier said Sunday that investigators had received 646 tips since the attack and have since conducted more than 90 interviews.

The MPD employed four detectives, 24 patrol officers and five support staff to handle criminal investigations. The FBI has 22 investigators in Moscow, 20 agents in other areas of the United States and two Behavioral Analysis Unit agents working the case.

The Idaho State Police has deployed 20 investigators, 15 state troopers, a public information officer and a forensic services team as well as 15 uniformed troopers to assist other patrols at the scene.
