Pakistan’s PM selects Lt Gen Asim Munir as new army chief

Islamabad: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday Lt. Asim Munir as the new army chief in place of the current general Qamar Javed Bajwa,
Bajwa, 61, is due to retire on November 29 after an extension of three years. He had denied seeking another extension.
Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza was elected as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
The new COAS (Chief of Army Staff) Lt Gen Munir is from the Frontier Force Regiment, and has headed the country’s elite spy agencies – the Inter-Services Intelligence which focuses on security and military intelligence.
He has served under the direct command of Bajwa in often troubled areas in the northern regions bordering Afghanistan, China and India.
Imran Khan removed Munir as ISI chief within eight months of his appointment and replaced him with an officer considered close to him.
Lt Gen Munir was due to retire on November 27. But now with his appointment as the Army Chief, he will serve for three more years.
