World Cup beer row has started again as England fans are forced to pay the same amount for a pint as in luxury hospitality

Ordinary supporters at Fanzone are paying the same as some of Doha’s richest visitors for a beer.

The USA team is among the VIPs staying at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel in the Pearl District.

A bucket of six 33cl cans of the official tournament tipple is on sale in the hotel’s sports bar for £51.20 – that’s £8.5 per can, or 26p per cl.

At Fanzone, it’s £11.62 for a 50cl can – so 22p per cl – in much less plush surroundings.

It follows a huge outcry from Games-goers following the announcement that alcoholic beverages would not be sold in World Cup stadiums.

However, some could still be bought for £19,000 in box seats.

Prior to the tournament, it was believed that prices would be lower in FanZone.

However fans have been showing their ways of smuggling beer into World Cup games.

Some have placed booze in Coca-Cola sleeves and others have suggested filling hydration packs with alcohol.

The opening game of the tournament had Ecuadorian fans chanting “We want beer” as they beat the hosts 2–0 thanks to two goals from former West Ham and Everton striker Enner Valencia.

Fury over the drinking situation turned even worse as it was revealed that there would be no water fountains in the Fanzone and other areas.

This became a problem due to the intense heat in Qatar as fans would have to pay for water bottles with no opportunity for refills.
